When Should You Start Packing for a Move to Avoid Last-Minute Stress?

Packing always takes longer than expected. Even with good intentions, many people don’t start early enough and end up rushing during the final week.

A good rule of thumb is to begin packing non-essential items several weeks before moving day and leave everyday essentials for last. If you work full time or have young children, packing without help often requires starting even earlier—around six weeks ahead—to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

Starting early allows time for thoughtful packing and prevents stressful, late-night packing sessions. Planning ahead—or hiring professional packers—helps keep the process calm, organized, and manageable.
