What to Pack Last When You're Moving (And Why It Matters)

Most people pack what's in front of them and deal with the consequences later. The problem usually shows up around day three when you can't find your phone charger, your kid is asking for their favorite cup, and you're pretty sure the coffee maker is in one of the fourteen boxes stacked in the garage.

What you pack last is just as strategic as what you pack first.

The everyday kitchen essentials. Coffee maker, one set of dishes, a few glasses, basic cooking tools, and anything your family reaches for daily. These get packed the morning of your move or the night before at the earliest. You want these unpacked and functional within the first hour in your new home.

Toilet paper and shower curtains. This sounds obvious until you're standing in your new bathroom at 9pm with neither. Pack these last, unpack these first. Every single time.

Medications and daily personal care. Toothbrushes, medications, vitamins, and anything that is part of your morning or evening routine. These should travel with you personally — not in a moving box at all if possible. Put them in a bag that stays in your car.

Kids essentials and comfort items. A favorite toy, a stuffed animal, a tablet, snacks. Whatever keeps your child calm and occupied on move day. Pack these last and keep them accessible. A stressed out child on move day adds a layer of chaos that no packing system can fix.

Pet supplies. Food, bowls, leash, and anything your pet needs for the first 24 hours. Same rule — pack last, unpack first.

A dedicated box for important documents, keys, and remotes. This one box deserves its own label, its own spot on the truck, and your full attention. Passports, birth certificates, closing documents, garage door openers, spare keys, and every remote control in the house go in here together. Losing any of these in a move is a headache that can take days to sort out. Keep this box with you if possible — not buried in the truck.

A first night box. One box or bag per person with everything needed for the first night and morning. Pajamas, a change of clothes, phone charger, toiletries, and a snack. Label it clearly and load it last so it comes off the truck first. This one box eliminates the frantic unpacking that happens at 10pm when everyone is exhausted.

The box cutters. Still don't pack them. We mentioned this in our last blog and we mean it.
